Halo 3 Becomes The World's Biggest Selling Game

Halo 3 has become the biggest ever entertainment event in history, surpassing such events as the release of the next Harry Potter book and the release of Spiderman 3. In the first 24 HOURS it grossed an estimated $170 million in the US alone.

Even before any retail shop opened its doors it had sold 1.7 million copies in presales and with 10,000 stores holding Midnight Madness events up and down the country the scenes were reminiscent of major movie premiers.

Times Square in New York was abuzz with fans awaiting the official release at midnight with major sport and TV personalties joining in the celebrations.

With retailers across the country reporting phenomonal demand for the game Bob McKenzie, Senior Vice President for GameStop Corp said that,"The initial demand we've seen for Halo 3 is astounding, and the game is on track to being the number one gaming title of all time."
Halo 3 is available in three different formats. The Standard Edition contains the game disc and manual in the standard Xbox packaging.

The Collector's Edition is in a custom metal case that contains the game disc, manual, an interactive Xbox bonus disc with several featurettes and "Beastiarum" a hard cover bound collection of information and art on the different species, cultures and civilizations featured in the game.

Then there's the Legendary Edition which contains the game disc, manual, bonus disk, Beastiarum, a DVD containing special exclusive content and a scale replica of Master Chief's helmet as a case for the three discs.

In addition Gamestation stores in the UK gave a limited edition 3 inch Master Chief figure from McFarlane Toys with the first 1000 to be pre-ordered.

Halo 3 is the third and last in the first of the Halo trilogies of games, a new trilogy is currently in production, and focuses on the interstellar war in the 26 Century between the Covenant and Mankind.

The Covenant is a collection of Alien races who have joined together intent on the destruction of Earth and Mankind.

The Covenant, after decades of war, have now begun the invasion of Earth and you, as the Master Chief, must try and defend humanity. Master Chief is the last known SPARTAN-117 genetically enhanced super soldier surviving after the Covenant attacked and destroyed the Reach, mankind's military production base, in Halo.

The games story line and action mainly takes place on foot in Halo 3 but there is also an element of vehicle combat in the game. Halo 3 largely focuses on the struggle between mankind, the Covenant and the Flood.

There are several different environments in the game ranging from lush jungle, to battle damaged cities and sparse desert. The behaviour and interactivity of AI, both enemies and allies, has been significantly improve including non-combatant behaviour also.

For the first time Halo 3 allows up to four players to play co-operative game play on one Xbox 360 or up to 16 players in a single match over a LAN or Xbox Live.

Also, unlike the previous Halo games, instead of each player assuming an identical role of Master Chief in Halo 3 the first player takes up the role of Master Chief, the second player plays the Arbiter and the last two players create Elites. Although each player has identical starting abilities each has different starting weapons.

Story Synopsis
I will try to be brief here without giving away to much detail or to many spoilers. Halo 3 doesn't begin immediately from where Halo 2 left off as a comic mini-series Hao: Uprising will bridge the gap between the two.

The game begins with Master Chief back on an Earth that has been ravaged and desicated by Covenant loyalists under the control of the Prophet of Truth. The Master Chief, along with the Arbiter, make their way to an UNSC outpost, but shortly after their arrival it is attacked and destroyed by the Covenant.

Under orders from Commander Keyes and Lord Hood they proceed to the African city of Voi to destroy the Covenant's anti air defences in preparation for an all out attack on Truth.
However Truth activates a large artifact to create a huge slipspace portal that the Covenant ships escape through. As the humans ponder on what to do a ship controlled by the Flood arrives through the slipspace and crash lands quickly spreadly the parasite in it throughout the city.

With the arrival of the Elite Fleet Master Chief attempts to fight off the Flood and cover infected areas with glass. Deciding to follow Truth Master Chief, the Arbiter and the Elite Fleet leave Earth via the slipspace and arrive near a huge artificial mega-structure, which they find out is the Ark and is positioned outside the Milky Way. Led by Guilty Spark the group investigate the Ark and arrive at the control room barely in time to prevent Truth from activating the rings. Meanwhile a Flood infested High Charity arrives by slipspace and after the Prophet of Truth has been executed they discover that the Ark has constructed another ring. In order to prevent The Flood spreading further Master Chief activates the ring.

Master Chief and the Arbiter then take High Charity to rescue Cortana who is still being held captive by Gravemind then after rescuing her they destroy the Covenants homeworld, apparently destroying Gravemind but...
